How does a home-based studio work?

I spent nine years going to a variety of Pilates studios before opening my own studio in 2014. The one aspect of Pilates I did not enjoy was lack of privacy since most commercial spaces have multiple clients working out at the same time. I found noise from other clients distracting and sharing equipment with others impeded the flow of my sessions.

Thus, I am committed to maintaining a highly professional but private studio space.

Clients park in the driveway and enter through a private front door. A set of stairs take you directly to the studio and access to a private restroom if needed. You will have a place to hang your jacket and store your shoes.

The studio is fully equipped with a Reformer, Cadillac (Trapeze Table), Wunda Chairs, and Ladder Barrel. The equipment is made by Balanced Body and Peak Pilates, two highly regarded manufacturers and Pilates education centers in the U.S. The equipment is studio-grade and made of beautiful maple wood.

What should I know before my first visit?

How do I prepare for Pilates?

Every individual’s body is unique and has its own strengths and unique challenges.

Whether you rarely exercise or are already a committed fitness practitioner, Pilates is designed for every individual so there is no time like the present to get started.

Simply come to the practice of Pilates with an open mind and a willingness to challenge yourself physically and mentally.

What do I wear?

You should wear clothing that makes you comfortable and will not restrict a full range of motion.

Pilates is generally done barefoot but socks or Pilates footies or toe socks may be worn. All Pilates apparatus is thoroughly wiped down after each session.

Two important suggestions for a comfortable work out:

1. Consider tops that are longer or pants with a suitable waist band for coverage during bends.

2. If you like wearing shorts, make sure they are lined to ensure coverage during movements where you are lying down.

Do not wear perfumes, lotions or heavy sunscreen. They are very difficult to remove from the equipment.

How often should I do Pilates?

What’s most important is to create a regular practice whether that means coming once, twice or three times a week.

Pilates is a thoughtful movement system and coming regularly will allow you to more easily become familiar with the fundamental techniques, exercises and the equipment. As your practice grows, we can advance exercises and layer in deeper nuance which means added strength, better alignment and stronger mind-body connection.

Because we humans are really good at putting our needs on the back burner, consistently carving out “me time” will reinforce healthful habits and routines that spill over into all aspects of your life.

And, Pilates feels great! Once you’ve found your groove you’ll want a little Pilates in your daily life. I’m always happy to give clients exercises to do at home to strengthen their practice when they can’t be at the studio.

“I’ve been working with Jodi for more than five years and she’s amazing. She’s very in tune with how to modify exercises for my areas of weakness and really great at mixing things up so that sessions aren’t too repetitive. She’s so great that even though I moved out of town, I continue to make the drive in for weekly sessions.”
